What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is any procedure with the objective of enhancing the aesthetics of your smile. The extent of treatment can vary from person to person. This all depends on their desired goals.

Cosmetic dentistry typically uses porcelain veneers and crowns to enhance your smile. However, we may use dental bridges or implants to fill empty spaces if any missing teeth are present.

Invisalign is another great cosmetic dental option to improve your smile. Aligning your teeth improves the appearance of your smile, and it also helps to promote better oral health. Tooth crowding and/or spacing makes proper oral hygiene difficult. As a result, you are at an increased risk for cavities and gum disease. In addition, a more stable bite protects your teeth against tooth wear and chipping.

Teeth whitening is another fantastic dental care option to rejuvenate and brighten your smile. We offer Phillips Zoom whitening with both North Austin in-office whitening and take-home kits available. In-office teeth whitening is a quick, painless dentistry procedure. The Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed Lamp technology that we use is able to provide brilliant results in less than 2 hours in our Round Rock dental office. Most of our patients experience limited to no post-operative dental sensitivity. Experience same-day results with teeth up to 8 shades lighter! Contact us to learn more.

How does the process of a smile makeover work?

Plan & Vision

Your first Austin TX cosmetic dentistry appointment consists of a consultation. It is at this important dental visit that we lay the foundation for a successful smile makeover. Your initial consult is an extremely critical visit for your smile makeover. Before we design your new smile, it is very important for us to have a genuine open dialogue discussing your goals and vision for your new smile. We begin this process by evaluating your overall dental health.

Communication and Development

Once we establish your goals, we can then proceed to examine the health of your teeth with a comprehensive exam. You will have a series of radiographs and photos taken. This will enable us to treat any active disease. We use these x-rays to evaluate your gum health and check for cavities or cracked teeth. After your comprehensive exam, we then take a series of intra-oral and extra-oral photos. We will also take a digital scan of your teeth with our state of the art iTero digital scanner. This creates a digital 3D model of your teeth that will help us properly design your new smile. The iTero digital scan of your teeth enables us to better communicate our vision with the lab.

Artistic Implementation

These tools help to ensure that we design your restorations in a way that flows seamlessly with your lips and your facial structure. The goal is to enhance your smile and restore vitality. An iTero digital scan also helps produce a 3D printed model. With our state of the art dental lab and world class ceramists, we use this scan to create a template for your new smile. Once we complete the smile design, we will arrange a consult to show you what is possible before even touching your teeth!

Austin, Texas Cosmetic Dental Smile Design

After your initial Austin cosmetic dentistry visit, Dr. Heiman will work with our state of the art laboratory to design the proper smile for you. The lab will help Dr. Heiman execute your collaborative vision for your new smile. After the planning phase, the lab will create a model designed to capture your goals for your new and improved smile. In dentistry, we also refer to this as a “wax-up”. This is essentially a dental prototype of what we hope to accomplish. At this point, we will be able to analyze the smile wax-up and address what you like or dislike about it so we can make changes as needed.

This process relies on good communication to better support us in understanding your dentistry desires. As a result of proper cosmetic dental planning, we can very predictably design a stunning smile makeover!

Quality Hand-Fabricated Ceramic Restorations

One of the key factors that separates our cosmetic smile makeovers is the quality of the lab we use. Most dental laboratories use computers and machines to fabricate your restorations.

For your smile makeover, Dr. Heiman will work with state of the art ceramists who fabricate your restorations by hand. Think of this in the same way as buying handcrafted gold jewelry versus mass-produced jewelry. As a result, the attention to detail and the quality of the ceramic is far superior. Many dentists utilize average labs for their smile makeovers which produces very fake-looking teeth. The veneers/crowns often lack a natural appearance and do not have characteristics that mimic nature. We take great pride in trying to replicate nature as much as possible so that your new teeth look great but are not fake-looking.

Austin Texas Cosmetic Dentist Frequently Asked Questions

What is a porcelain dental veneer?

A porcelain dental veneer is a restoration designed to enhance the aesthetics of one’s teeth. It is an extremely thin porcelain restoration that bonds to the front of your tooth. Veneers can change the shape, color, size, and symmetry of your teeth. The process of creating veneers that fit one’s smile is very involved. We examine each patient carefully to produce a predictable result, both aesthetically and functionally.

Can I eat normally with porcelain dental veneers?

Absolutely! Porcelain veneers are made of a very strong ceramic. Therefore, you can function as you would with your natural teeth.

Do porcelain veneers get stained?

Porcelain veneers are actually more resistant to staining than your natural teeth. As a result, you can indulge in coffee or wine without concern.

Does it hurt to get veneers placed?

We are mindful of delivering all of our dental services with your comfort in mind! We ensure that you are sufficiently numb before we begin the procedure. Once numb, we shape the teeth very slightly to create room for the porcelain veneers. You may experience some very mild soreness in your gums after treatment. However, most patients do fine with Advil or Tylenol if needed. Any soreness dissipates fairly quickly.

I grind my teeth, will dental veneers help?

Porcelain veneers help to restore your smile, but dental veneers will not protect against grinding. As a result, we fabricate night guards for all of our dental patients who receive veneers.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is most commonly used to repair small fractures of your front teeth. The procedure is extremely technique sensitive and requires great attention to detail to restore proper aesthetics. When done correctly, bonding is an excellent option to repair small tooth fractures. Larger fractures may require more extensive treatment, such as a crown or a veneer. If you have chipped your tooth, come visit us as soon as possible to prevent the fracture from progressing.

I notice my teeth have been getting discolored, how can we fix this?

Bleaching, also known as teeth whitening, is a procedure that brightens or “whitens” one’s teeth. We offer two options to help enhance the color of your teeth – chair-side bleaching and take-home bleaching. Your Austin, Texas cosmetic dentist at Greenlawn Dental can provide more information about how to achieve the desired shade for your smile.

What is the difference between chair-side and take-home teeth bleaching?

Chair-side bleaching is completed in the office. We utilize the strongest bleaching gel available to transform the shade of your teeth. When you leave the office your teeth will have reached an optimal shade. As it sounds, take-home bleaching is achieved by you at home. We will fabricate custom-fitted trays and provide you with bleaching gel that is safe to use without the supervision of a dental professional. You are instructed to bleach once daily until desired whiteness is achieved. Please inquire as to which teeth whitening option may be best for you.

Is teeth whitening harmful to your teeth?

Professional grade teeth whitening is extremely safe and approved by the American Dental Association. Because of recent improvements in dentistry bleaching gel, it is very safe and pain-free.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

The majority of our patients experience little to no dental sensitivity. However, we recommend using anti-sensitivity tooth paste if you have very sensitive teeth. This may be done before your Austin teeth whitening visit. Doing so will help to reduce your sensitivity.
